re: montreal murals

Hello friends, fans, foe and lovers,

here is a new video based on my time in Montreal participating at the "Decolonizing Street Art Festival," in late August 2014. I was there for 10 days or more and painted a hell of a lot of walls. haha, it was awesome.

I met Red Bandit from L.A., Jessica Sabogal from San Francisco and Kay Marie Gallivan from Victoria, BC. and we crushed out a bunch of walls with murals and street art, it was great fun! So refreshing to paint in a place where you didn't have to jump through a lot of bureaucratic hoops to make some cool street art and no hassles from the cops. The organizers asked a few businesses if we could paint and they said "yes" or "no" and it was as easy as that i think?

Anyway, here's a video I shot on my gopro camera of a small piece I worked on while i was there with my new friends and it was fun. Have a look see and if you're in Montreal, go check it out and let me know how the murals are holding up!!!

kukstetsemc and cheers!

re: new video!

Hello friends, fans, foe and lovers,

i bring a new video to you, carried down from the mountain on a donkey with the original 15 commandments. kidding. it's a video featuring the short children's story "Goodnight Goon," as read by my daughter Tater. a fun project i thought i'd start and do something weekly. eventually the plan is to do some stories in Nlaka'pamux and or Secwepemc, which would be really cool!

new mediums to get kids into art, language, reading and culture are always a good thing!

so, anyway, have a watch and stay tuned. my friend mike and i will also be launching a comedy channel soon on youtube!

in the meantime,

kukstetsemc!

re: health awareness?

hello friends, fans, foe and lovers,

due to the recent bout of bronchitis i've endured, one thing i feel i must share, is that i've developed a hyper sensitivity to things like perfume, the smell of smoke, weed, vehicle exhaust, stale air and even the differences of air pressure in different environments such as the apartment i live in. for example, i went for a short walk for fresh air, came back into my building and the entryway smells like old carpet and stale air, but not as bad as when i open the hallway door to get to my apartment. the air there was still and dead, i felt my breathing labour and increase trying to compensate for the lack of fresh oxygen and struggled to open the door, keys fumbling about, sweat on my brow until i finally unlocked the door and got inside my apartment. which smelled like my dinner of baked potatoes, carrots, celery and sausages. haha. but i could feel the air pressure difference in each environment in my lungs and how hard they had to work. it was brutal and i've never really noticed anything like that before.

i think because before things were just "given" or yeah, that's what the place smells like or whatever, i can even notice the stench of a heavy smoker that much more, it's quite sickening to me now, you know when someone smokes so much it's practically and probably coming out of their pores? that sweet, yet sour stench of nicotine ingrained in their yellow fingers, hair and clothes. i was at a music store and there were 3 very sketchy people making life uncomfortable for the clerks because they separated in the store and suddenly they had to watch them like hawks. i could smell them six feet away. or when i was at the pharmacist waiting to get my antibiotics 2 women wandered around the aisle close to me and sweet, pungent smell of their perfume filled my lungs and made me cough until i got up and moved to another part of the store. i even had to change my shampoo and soap because it was too smelly to find something far more neutral. this is so weird because it's thing i might have noticed before but didn't give a damn yet now i can't stand it and have to leave. if this is some kind of super power, it sucks. haha.

anyway, just something i've noticed and had to get off my chest and mind. so, stay healthy friends, as you get older it is starting to feel like healing is taking longer, boo-urns!

cheers,

cb.

re: health, wellness and our healthcare system.

hello friends, fans, foe and lovers,

hope all is well in your world. i've been overcoming bronchitis and it's been a slog through the healthcare system to get it diagnosed and treated properly. i was initially sick for a week, it was gradually getting worse and worse, the coughing and disruption in my sleeping patterns. by the time i got to the doctor after 7 days, i was sleeping sporadically, 30 to 45 minutes at a time and then coughing brutally spitting out phlegm and drenched in sweat.

those were long nights, and by the time i saw a doctor it was at a walk in clinic here in kamloops, where my visit with the doctor was all of 3 or 4 minutes and out the door i was getting x rays on my lungs in case it was pnuemonia and a prescription for 2 inhalers to help me breathe. two days later i went back to the walk in clinic and saw another doctor, an older one who actually seemed to care and took a few minutes longer to get information from me. i received another prescription this time for antibiotics for bronchitis which i've been using and am feeling better more and more.

this made me wonder why the doctors hammered through patients so quickly, do they get paid per patient and time is money? why if there is a "doctor shortage," in town does this one walk in clinic have 14 doctors on the roster? is it more lucrative to work out of a walk in clinic as opposed to a private practice? i remember when i actually had a family doctor, a doctor i had for 10 years, my visits with him were at least 20 minutes and he listened carefully and calmly. the doctors in walk in clinics never sit, pace around and make what i believe are rushed decisions and you have to be careful about your diagnosis. get a second opinion if you don't feel better or trust in what you have been told.

one positive thing that has come out of this bout of bronchitis is i now have a singular driven goal to improve my health mentally, physically and spiritually. i never want to get sick like this again. i'm also going to work on a series of art, drawings and paintings about illness. personify illness. in the form of monsters. so, with that i've included a few drawings from another artist named John Kenn, who is fantastic at drawing monsters on yellow post it note pads. to me, they represent fears which can be illness, it's a starting point for me at the very least.

take good care of yourself,

Cb.

re: cache creek murals

Hello friends, foe, fans and lovers,

Here's a couple murals from earlier this year, it was quite fun and community driven murals can be a learning experience for both the artist and the students being mentored. this year i worked with both youth and elders on murals and they were all awesome experiences and i learned as much as i shared. i can't wait for the next mural!

in the meantime i'm drawing and doing research online for new inspiration and techniques and ideas. it never ends!

until next time,

Cb.

this last photo is a mural recovery and rescue
from an attempted sun type thing, myself
and the students in the photo fixed up the sun
added the sky flow and the clouds
in a couple days. fun!

re: mural in spences bridge, bc

hello friends, fans, foe and lovers,

here's the before and after shot for a mural in Spences Bridge, BC, it's about a kilometre away from the #1 highway, the Trans Canada turn off onto highway 8, the Spences Bridge to Merritt, BC highway. which is also one of my fave drives ever. such a fun drive, beautiful and lots of curves and stuff.

this one is 165 feet in length and was done in a week with help from the Elder's Vision Council in Spences Bridge, a wonderful group to have worked with and these photos do not show the great detail that is in the mural. I'll have to find more.

until next time,

Cb.

These are panorama photos and you have to click on them to enlarge them!

re: another heckuva year!!

Hello friends, fans, foe and lovers,

it's been a heckuva year so far. i've painted 250 feet of murals this year, mainly this late summer and fall in both kamloops, cache creek and spences bridge, bc. that's approximately 405 feet of murals in the thompson nicola regional district. TNRD. whoa! well, legal ones anyway, lol!

i'll post a few flicks.

This is a mural from the Kamloops Aboriginal Friendship Society at 125 palm street, go check it out.

The photos show the process of putting up a mural. whew.

re: 1st of three articles i've written this year.

hello friends, fans, foe and hustlers,

been awhile, i've been busy, looking for work, hustling, slinging, doing my best to keep my head above the water. i've written three articles this year so far. low numbers to be sure. but i'm going to post them for your reading and viewing pleasure!

enjoy!?

CB

It started like this: recently i was approached by a local newspaper about graffiti and taggers. The poor writer didn't know where to start, so i explained it as clearly as possible in as few words as possible. have a read!?

Hi _______,

tell me more about your article.

also, a tagger is not a graffiti artist. there's a world of difference. a tagger is like the first steps to becoming a graffiti artist. a tagger is a vandal. a graffiti artist is just that, an artist that has taken years to develop a style and perfect what they do. kids start out with a "tag" to become known throughout a city.

if they become "citywide" that means people across town know who they are. then if they're serious about it, they start working on a "piece" meaning graff style letters that represent their name. usually it starts out as a "bomb" or "throwie" style letters, the big bubbly style first associated with philadelphia and then new york. after awhile and practice they keep developing their style and become more intricate, gradually moving towards a west coast L.A. style of writing that is nearly illegible to the untrained eye.

this is called "wildstyle," and there's some great graff movies out there on youtube. "kings and toys" which refers to a starting out graff writer as a "toy" and an experienced one as a "king." another great movie is actually called "wildstyle" and documents the explosion of this gnarly style of graffiti art at it's epicentre of venice beach, california. there is a hugely successful group of "writers" from l.a. called "the seventh letter," google them. they've got a fashion brand and crew of writers such as saber, revok, ewok, pose, and many more that form a globally renowned "crew" of writers and streets artists. they are the realm of kings.

then there is "street art" which is the wildly creative trend of people who don't do "letters" but actually create art pieces instead, a totally different genre that features skills and strengths on "characters" which is basically like letters, to full blown art masterpieces such as things done by blu, how and nosm, david choe, dabs and myla banksy, james jean and many more.

there are also awesome street art festivals around the world that feature the work of some of these artists such as the "under pressure" festival here in canada that happens in ottawa and or montreal, nuart festival in stavanger, norway, Fame festival in grottalagie, italy, pow wow! in honalulu, hawaii, Art basel in miami, and many more around the world. i myself have been pretty fortunate to be invited and have painted across canada doing "street art," from victoria, vancouver, kamloops, kelowna, penticton, vernon, grand forks, calgary, prince albert, regina, brandon manitoba, winnipeg, toronto, sault st. marie, hamilton, ottawa, hull and montreal.

so, to get from being a "toy" to a "king" takes many years of dedicated practice drawing out your name, developing your style and then many hundreds if not thousands of dollars. the average graffiti piece in terms of "letters" can be between $50 to $150 you see on a train or a wall, and a street art mural even more. cans of paint are not the crap "civilians" paint with, such as krylon or rustoleum, that's from the 1980's, because there is now a global market on graffiti art with companies started by graffiti artists and writers that create acrylic based, high pigment colours paint starting about $6 on the low side per can to upwards of $10 and $12 a can of 400 or 500ml paint. there are also low and high pressure cans for different paint styles, as well as a plethora of "caps" meaning the paint nozzles used. belton, montana, kobra, ironlak and more are some of the major global companies that make spray cans specifically for street art.

at any given time i'd guess kamloops has about 50 to 100 taggers, the most active age is probably grade 9 to 11 and then they usually stop. these are disenfranchised kids who feel they have no voice or power and tagging represents that. it's a way for them to rebel. to get known. to feel something in a society they don't feel included in. when they go beyond that and get into creating "pieces" meaning larger scale graffiti art or words, it takes maturity and practice and money. doing street art isn't cheap. so, as for practicing street artists in the loops, i'd say there's less than 20. most people stop once they hit their 20's or they move on in life to other communities.

to me, kamloops needs what are known as "free walls," and major cities in canada have them, they provide safe, creative opportunities for youth to express themselves on large walls on created spaces or abandoned buildings or whatever. here in kamloops, if you want to graffiti art, you have to risk your life. walls are few and far between and involve finding a space to paint that is abandoned, unsafe and populated by homeless people, drug addicts and more. i've painted at places where you have to deal with homeless people that are sketched out and have mental health issues, addiction issues, alcohol issues and can be violently aggressive towards anyone. then there are broken bottles, needles, crack pipes strewn about that you have to be careful about. all just to paint peacefully on a wall in a place no one will ever see, but it's fun and relaxing once you get past all the other madness.

i had a graffiti art show last year in kelowna at the alternator centre for creative art and part of the exhibition was showing that side of street art, the stuff you have to deal with just to paint. a free wall would be a safe place for youth to showcase their skills and talent without risking their lives. but it probably won't happen until the kid or grandchild of a city councillor or mayor gets hurt, then it'll become a priority. god i'm jaded. haha. ottawa has a massive legal wall. ottawa. think about that. haha.

does that help?

if you have anymore questions contact me, i'm about to start a mural at the kamloops aboriginal friendship centre next week! i've got a couple others ones in town, one at the emerald centre downtown, the former rendezvous hotel, and behind Kamloops Immigrant Services on the north shore, that one is massive, i think 125 feet wide!

cheers,
cb.

re: the adventure continues..............

Hello friends, fans, foe and lovers,

here are a couple panorama's from my mum's house. as you can see the sun and son were rising that morning, i got up and out to take some photos. rez life is a different life. i've spent nearly half of this year back on the reserve, the longest amount of time in years. i learned a lot and it was both good and not so good. right now the cherries are ready, we got tomatoes, jalapeno peppers, potatoes, raspberries, black berries, red currents, peach trees and more planted this spring.

it was a lot of hard work, but it'll be worth it, we only lost 2 raspberry plants, they were pretty small and didn't survive the transplanting, but the other 20 or so did and are 3 feet tall already. i love fresh raspberries and in the coming years we'll have plenty! reconnecting to the reserve and everyone on it has been pretty cool. overall a positive learning experience this year and i'd do it again. i mean, i'll always be connected to our land and people, but having the opportunity to work for the band and live on reserve is something i'd consider.

there are sacrifices, it wasn't easy, the winter was filled with short days, grey skies and melancholy, but i survived, my mum has a sun lamp so i was turning it on every day. once spring started and the days were getting longer, it was such a relief! in march i was literally ecstatic about the days getting longer, practically jumping up and down over it. i'd sit outside more and breathe in the air. plants coming to life, the earth waking up, it was awesome.

our seasons seem to be changing faster here in the southern interior, i distinctly remember 4 different seasons, now it seems to be a 5 month winter of grey and cold, a month of spring and then blistering hot summers that are dry and full of smoke from the multitude of wildfires raging across western canada and the united states (we get a lot of smoke from the great basin in washington state, it's climate is a lot like the southern interiors, a continuation of it, and huge fires.) and then it's october and winter starts again. it's crazy weather days and it shows no sign of stopping, and that's something i've noticed in my lifetime, i can't imagine what my kids will have to deal with in theirs. damn.

in the meantime, i've started writing a super natural thriller based on my time here and it will have the Nlaka'pamux language featured in it as well, lot's of it! time to forge new literary genre's, "aboriginal horror." what do you think?

until next time lovers,

CB.

re: sour notes and everything in between.....

Hello lovers, friends, fan and foe,

day 5 in changing my attitude and lifestyle, time to get healthy, happy and strong again. it's funny, people can say they're doing fine, i did for ages, but really things aren't always that way. for myself, i've been packing around too much baggage the past few years, it was unhealthy and i was very unhappy. but if you'd have asked, i would've said, "i'm fine, good, thanks." but really i wasn't. these days i truly feel good and although it's early in my changes, i know what i have to do, and from there on the goals will change and new ideas, new creative projects, new collaborations and many new things will come from this and i know it will. positive attracts positive, negative attracts negative in terms of human mental, physical and emotional conditions, at least for me it did. haha.

in the meantime, i'm playing guitar like mad again, recording riffs and ideas, working on a 58 page colouring book for grown ups or those that never grew up, haha, and writing new poems and a new work of fiction, a short story, a super natural aboriginal thriller!!!! some of it is even in the Nlaka'pamux language!!!

hope all is well in your world, be brave, be strong! challenge the normative of existence and yourself.
or don't. whatever makes you happy. haha.
